Markham asks to recipient to thank Mr. Mason of the Dodge Publishing Co. for sending him Mr. Ehrmann's poem, Breaking Hoe Ties. He indicates that he does not feel that writing an introduction to it would add enough value to justify the costs Markham would be forced to charge for the time and trouble.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
